The New Law on Climate Change

Concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere as a result of human activities are the cause of more extreme climate changes than those caused by nature.

The Serbian Law on climate change was adopted on 18 March 2021, and its implementation will establish a system for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensure adaptation to changed climate conditions.

In order to achieve the goals of this law, public bodies, in addition to adopting specific by-laws and ordinances, should also adopt appropriate sectoral policies and measures.

In this article, JPM Partner Jelena Stankovic provides an overview of the actions and duties established by this law, with other related regulations that will be implemented in practice. It remains to be seen how the worst effects of climate change will be reduced or limited, especially having in mind the current problems of environmental pollution and particularly the growing problem of air pollution in Serbia.
