Serbia Adopts New Energy Strategy Through 2050

Serbia's National Assembly has approved a new Energy Development Strategy extending to 2040, with projections reaching 2050, marking a significant shift in the country's energy policy.

The strategy, adopted in November 2024, prioritizes energy security while setting ambitious goals for decarbonization, environmental protection, energy efficiency, and market competitiveness.

Key measures include:

  • Improving energy efficiency and reducing losses in production, distribution, and transport.
  • Transitioning from coal to natural gas and renewable energy sources (RES) for electricity production.
  • Increasing the share of RES in energy consumption and using heat pumps for heating.
  • Developing energy storage systems for electricity and heat from RES.
  • Digitalizing energy processes for better efficiency and management.

This forward-looking Strategy aims to enhance energy resilience, meet climate commitments, and modernize Serbia’s energy sector for sustainable development, more on this topic in the article below written by Jelena Gazivoda, Nikola Đorđević and Marko Mrđa.
