(Re)Shaping Belgrade

Belgrade’s history reflects resilience and adaptability, shaped by diverse rulers and architectural influences—from medieval dynasties to Ottoman mosques, Austro-Hungarian neoclassicism, and socialist-era brutalism.

Unlike past transformations driven by conquest, today’s changes stem from ambition, investment, and vision. In recent years, large-scale redevelopment projects have reshaped the city, converting industrial zones into cultural hubs, office spaces, and residential complexes.

Some historic structures are preserved and repurposed, while others make way for modern high-rises and expansive developments. This mirrors global trends seen in cities like New York and London.

With over a million square meters of new developments on the horizon, Belgrade faces the challenge of balancing heritage preservation with modernization. Our Associate Petar Mrdja in this article is raising the question—will the new architecture complement or overshadow the city’s historic charm?
